The Kartavya Path (then Central Vista Avenue) is the 3km long stretch between India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan, that includes the Rajpath, its adjoining lawns and canals, Vijay Chowk, and the India Gate Plaza. The original landscape of Kartavya Path was not designed for heavy public use and is under much stress today.
The Kartavya Path refurbishment project aims to make the Avenue an icon that truly befits India. It will achieve this by expanding, strengthening, and restoring the avenue’s landscape and tree cover, providing amenities that make it comfortable for civic users and tourists to use, and making it more pedestrian-friendly and easier for traffic to negotiate with the introduction of pedestrian underpasses at two important junctions. The design also provides space and facilities for vendors and an amphitheater at the India Gate Plaza for public performances. The proposal ensures that arrangements for national events cause minimal disruption and ensures integrity and continuity of the Vista’s original layout, its geometries, and its architectural character.
