Swarnim Park, Gandhinagar lies along the axis marked by Mahatma Mandir – an event center, museum and memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi – and the proposed Panchamrut Bhavan – a museum exhibiting the story of the growth of Gujarat. Along with these two buildings, the axis comprises the Central Secretariat of Gujarat and the Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) building. The site for development of Swarnim Park is located on this spine between Mahatma Mandir and the Vidhan Sabha.Â
The Project develops the landscape into a central public space which includes widening of Swarnim Park; developing green landscape in the form of gardens and groves; and adding public facilities and recreation spaces such as children’s plaza, food court, amphitheater, and a water body. The design also proposes four-lane vehicular underpasses at the intersection of the park with other streets of the city in order to maintain a continuous visual and physical corridor.Â
The Swarnim Park Project creates meaningful public realm at the center of governance of a growing capital. As a symbol of democratic principles, it provides a gathering space for all citizens between the memorial to Gandhi and the legislative center of the state.Â
