Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU), formerly known as Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), is spread across a 100-acre campus in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. PDEU offers courses ranging from science, technology and management to humanities and liberal arts.Â
To attract the best talent globally, HCP was appointed to design high-rise buildings which included hostels for international students and hotel facilities for visiting delegates. Three buildings were designed, of 12-storeys each, which include recreational areas at the ground level, hostel rooms for six levels and hotel facilities for the top 4 levels. The student hostels are designed to be double-occupancy rooms with attached bathrooms and shared balconies between every two rooms.Â
All floors open into large double volume lobby areas towards the centre of the building, to facilitate a sense of connectivity and community amongst the residents. The top four floors share a lavish 4-storey high atrium in the middle. The use of exposed concrete for slabs and polished kotastone flooring lend a sophisticated look to the interiors, while keeping it robust and easy to maintain.Â
The design and construction of these buildings was completed in less than 18 months, to allow PDEU to quickly expand its facilities and make best use of the resources available to them.Â
