The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), is a premier business school. The campus is known as much for its architectural prominence in Ahmedabad, as its pedagogy and academic standing. In 2014, the Institute floated a competition inviting conceptual proposals to expand its capacity from 1000 students to 2000, over the next 20 to 25 years. HCP worked with the institute to detail out the project brief based on their long-term vision.
A master plan strategy was evolved which is, in essence, a flexible framework that allows for sensitive and appropriate change. The vision for the campus is one that holistically protects, enhances, and integrates the two major assets of the campus, the iconic heritage buildings by Kahn and Raje, and the natural heritage, namely the network of spaces around and in between the buildings. Facilities planned to support the growth of the institute include additional learning spaces, dormitories, faculty and staff housing, sports facilities, and an auditorium. Conceptual services were also designed, phase-wise, for all the proposed development.
Additionally, we developed guidelines for the new buildings, including efficiency of land use, use of form and materials that blend with the existing iconic buildings, and respect for the grain and underlying order of the campus. At present, the first phase of the master plan is under construction.
